What to Look for in a Burglar Alarm System: A Complete Buying Guide

Whether you're upgrading an existing system, replacing one removed during building work, or buying an alarm for the first time, it helps to understand what each component actually does, rather than being told what you "need" without explanation.

Alarm System Grades: Understanding BS EN 50131

UK burglar alarms are graded from 1 to 4 under BS EN 50131, the European standard for intruder alarm systems. The grade reflects the level of protection against different types of intruder, from opportunist burglars with no tools (Grade 1-2) up to more determined intruders with knowledge and equipment (Grade 3-4). Most domestic properties are well served by a Grade 2 system, while higher-risk properties or those with specific insurance requirements may need Grade 3.

Wired or Wireless? What to Consider Before You Upgrade

If you're removing an old system, it's worth having it checked before ripping out the wiring. Existing cabling can often be reused, saving significant time and cost during installation. If you don't have existing wiring, adding a new wired system may involve lifting carpets or floorboards to hide cabling, usually put back exactly as found.

Modern wireless systems have improved considerably and can often be installed in a matter of hours with minimal disruption. Even a "wireless" system typically still needs a hardwired connection for the control panel's power supply and communicator. The main ongoing consideration with wireless sensors is battery replacement.

Key Components of a Burglar Alarm System

Control Panel

The control panel is the brain of the system, processing signals from sensors and powering the rest of the devices. It should be sited somewhere a burglar can't quickly access, connected to mains power via an unswitched fused spur, and fitted with a battery backup, typically replaced every four years depending on battery type.

Keypad

This is how you set and unset the alarm, usually by PIN code or proximity fob. We'd generally recommend a PIN code over a fob, since a fob can be stolen alongside your house keys, giving full access to the property.

Door and Window Contacts

A simple two-part magnetic sensor fitted to doors and windows, which signals the panel when a protected opening is used. These are usually backed up by another sensor type for added reliability.

PIR (Passive Infrared) Sensors

These detect movement by measuring changes in infrared heat. Since infrared can't pass through glass, PIRs won't false-trigger from outside, but they're not well suited to rooms with rapid temperature changes, such as garages.

Microwave and Dual-Technology Sensors

Microwave sensors detect movement using reflected microwave pulses, similar to radar. Combined with a PIR into a dual-technology sensor, both movement and body heat need to be detected before the alarm triggers, making these the most accurate option.

Vibration and Shock Sensors

These detect specific vibration frequencies, such as glass breaking, and are typically placed near windows or doors not used for normal entry.

Bellbox (External Sounder)

Mounted high on the property, this signals to anyone nearby that the property is alarmed. On larger properties, or those with multiple access points, more than one may be recommended.

Communicator

This transmits signals from your alarm panel to a monitoring station, alerting key holders and police almost as soon as the alarm triggers.
