CCTV monitoring explained

A guide to CCTV monitoring in the UK

How CCTV monitoring actually works, the different types of provider on the market, and the legal considerations worth knowing about before you install a system at home or at work.

The basics

How CCTV monitoring works

Every CCTV monitoring setup, whatever the brand or scale, is built from four core components.

Cameras

Fixed cameras cover a set field of view, while pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras can be moved and zoomed remotely to follow activity or check a specific area on demand.

Video recording

Footage is stored either locally on a DVR (analogue/hybrid) or NVR (IP), or increasingly via cloud storage - giving you a recorded history to go back to, separate from any live monitoring.

Transmission

Camera footage reaches the recorder and, where relevant, the monitoring station over either a wired network (typically more reliable) or a wireless network (typically easier to install).

Monitoring & response

The step that turns recorded footage into an active response - a detection event is verified by a person and, where appropriate, acted on. See how AMCO approaches this on our monitored CCTV page.

Market context

The CCTV manufacturer landscape

Several major manufacturers supply the CCTV hardware used across the UK market - among them Hikvision, Dahua, Axis Communications and Bosch Security Systems. Each offers cameras and recorders across different capability tiers, from entry-level to advanced AI-based detection, and the right fit depends on the site rather than any one brand being the automatic choice.

AMCO has a dedicated installer relationship around Hikvision equipment - see our Hikvision installer page for more on that specific brand.

Who provides it

Types of CCTV service provider

Not every CCTV provider offers the same thing. Broadly, they fall into three categories.

Security companies

Design, install and professionally monitor the system end to end - verifying alerts and coordinating a response, as AMCO does with its own monitored CCTV service.

IT integrators

Often supply and network CCTV as part of a wider IT setup, focused on the technical installation rather than an ongoing, professionally staffed monitoring response.

Self-monitoring solutions

Consumer-grade systems where footage is viewed via an app and the property owner is responsible for noticing and reacting to any activity themselves, with no third party watching on their behalf.

AMCO's professionally-monitored approach sits in the first category - see our monitored CCTV page for the full detail on how that works, or our CCTV upgrade page if you already have a system and are considering moving to a monitored setup.

Before you install

Legal & compliance considerations

UK GDPR applies to CCTV

Where cameras capture images of identifiable people, UK GDPR considerations come into play - both for domestic installs that extend beyond your own boundary and for commercial systems.

Your property vs. public areas & neighbours

There's an important distinction between cameras that film your own private property and those that capture public areas or a neighbour's property - the latter carries more compliance weight, so camera positioning and field of view are worth thinking through carefully at installation.

Signage

Appropriate signage to let people know CCTV is in operation is a standard part of responsible use, particularly where a system covers any area beyond your own private space.

This section is general, educational information and not specific legal advice. If you have particular compliance questions about your installation, please seek your own independent advice.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Recording CCTV stores footage for you to review later, but nobody is watching or responding in real time. Monitored CCTV adds a verification and response step - a detection event is checked by a person and, where appropriate, acted on immediately.
No. The UK market includes several major manufacturers - among them Hikvision, Dahua, Axis Communications and Bosch Security Systems - each offering different tiers of camera and recorder capability. The right choice depends on the site and the level of detection accuracy required, rather than any single brand being universally best.
It can suit low-risk situations, but it relies on the property owner noticing and reacting to a notification themselves, at any time of day. A professionally monitored service means a trained team is watching for genuine activity and can respond even if the property owner is unavailable.
UK GDPR considerations apply whenever cameras capture images of people, so it's worth thinking about camera positioning (avoiding unnecessary filming of neighbouring properties or public areas beyond what's needed) and appropriate signage to let people know recording is taking place. This page is general guidance, not legal advice - seek your own advice for specific compliance questions.
