CSL DualCom is one of the most widely used dual-path signalling technologies in the UK, sitting alongside options like AMCO's own LiveTalk audio-response monitoring as a way of meeting insurance-approved signalling requirements. This page sets out what's actually involved in a DualCom installation - from checking signal coverage through to reading the unit's diagnostic display.
This guide is intended as background reading, not a substitute for a qualified engineer. DualCom commissioning should always be carried out or verified by a trained installer - AMCO can handle the entire installation for you as part of a monitoring upgrade, so you don't have to do any of this yourself.
1) DualCom Pro product overview
CSL's current DualCom Pro range covers two variants, both built to comply with EN 50136 and PD 6662:
- DigiAir Pro - a single radio path device, using one cellular radio module to carry signalling traffic to the monitoring platform.
- GradeShift Pro - a dual-path device, offering either two independent radio paths or one radio path plus a LAN connection, giving genuine path diversity for higher-grade installations. See our guide to intruder alarm system grades for how signalling grade needs to match the rest of the system.
2) Pros & cons
Pros
- Genuine dual-path monitoring on the GradeShift Pro variant
- Supports DP3/DP4 insurance-compliant signalling grades
- A well-established, reliable platform used across the UK alarm industry
Cons
- Higher ongoing annual data/platform fees - typically £600 or more
- No audio verification, unlike AMCO's own LiveTalk monitoring
- LAN variants need proper IT/network setup to work reliably
3) Signal assessment
Before fitting anything, the site needs to be checked for suitable connectivity:
- Radio variants - a signal analyser is used to confirm at least two base stations are visible, each with a signal strength of 30% or better.
- LAN variants - the installation needs a nearby LAN port with outbound UDP port 50561 open and NAT enabled on the network.
4) Physical installation
- Fit the unit within a certification-appropriate enclosure, secured with adhesive pads or screws.
- Connect the aerials (radio variants) or the LAN cable.
- Power down the control panel before wiring the DualCom's power terminals (12/24V DC).
- Connect the serial cable - RS485, RS232 or TTL, depending on the panel being used.
- Connect the hardwired alarm and fault outputs.
- Restore power to the system.
5) Commissioning
Once powered up, the device automatically contacts CSL's Gemini Global Platform, which typically takes 5-8 minutes. During this time the display cycles through a few states:
- N - new device, not yet commissioned
- C - commissioning in progress
- R - commissioned and ready
It's normal to see a “SIM NOT READY” message on the display at some point during this process - this clears once commissioning completes and does not indicate a fault.
6) LED indicators & signal checking
During setup, the display shows the radio access technology (RAT) in use alongside signal strength on a 1-10 scale. DIP switch 4 can be toggled to instead show the signal strength of the secondary radio module, on dual-radio variants.
In normal day-to-day operation, a flashing dot on the display indicates active data transmission. Signal strength can also be checked remotely via the My Base app rather than reading the unit's display directly.
7) Radio troubleshooting
Two diagnostic menus record radio path failures, each capped at a maximum of 15 minutes:
- Menu N - primary radio path failures
- Menu O - secondary radio path failures
To improve a weak signal, our engineers will typically:
- Avoid coiling excess aerial cable, which degrades reception
- Move the unit away from other electrical equipment
- Relocate it higher up, or closer to a window
On dual-radio variants, an additional Radio/WiFi Module Enclosure with built-in aerials can also be fitted where reception remains marginal after repositioning.
8) Panel compatibility
DualCom connects to most major UK panel brands via a serial connection, though the connection type and cable differ by manufacturer:

9) Testing
Once wired and commissioned, the installation is proven by activating the alarm and confirming the monitoring station actually receives the signal, then checking the LED display matches the expected states set out above.
