How to upgrade an old ADT-installed alarm

Most ADT-installed wired alarm systems use a Honeywell Galaxy, Visonic or Scantronic panel. Because these are wired systems, upgrading them is generally far easier and cheaper than upgrading a wireless setup - here's what your options are.

Only need to switch the monitoring, not the hardware? See our guide to switching ADT alarm monitoring to AMCO instead.

Which panel do you have?

ADT-installed wired systems commonly use one of three panels

The exact panel depends on when your system was installed, but it's almost always one of these three families.

Honeywell Galaxy

A common panel range on ADT-installed commercial and domestic wired systems, often paired with a fixed-function keypad.

Visonic

PowerMax and PowerMaster ranges were also widely fitted by ADT, typically with a mix of wired and wireless sensors.

Scantronic

Another panel family commonly found on older ADT installations - see our dedicated Scantronic upgrade guide below for more detail.

Why this is good news

Wired systems are far easier and cheaper to upgrade

Because the cabling running through your walls is already in place, upgrading a wired ADT-installed system is a much more accessible job than upgrading a wireless one. Standard wiring and easily accessible components mean an engineer can generally replace the panel and keypad while reusing what's already there, rather than rewiring the property.

Costs vary by property and how much existing wiring can be reused, so we keep figures off this page - visit our price comparison page for current pricing, or call for a free quote.

Wiring stays put

Existing cabling and sensor wiring is reused wherever possible, keeping disruption and cost to a minimum.

Upgrade paths

Three ways to bring an old ADT system up to date

Each component can be upgraded independently, so you only need to change what's actually holding your system back.

Replace the panel

The ageing Galaxy, Visonic or Scantronic panel is swapped for a Texecom Premier Elite panel, generally reusing the existing wiring.

Replace the keypad

Older Galaxy-style fixed keypads can be swapped for a modern, backlit Texecom keypad that's far easier to read and use.

Keep or add sensors

Existing wired PIRs, door contacts and other sensors can often be reused as-is, or added to, rather than replaced outright.

A lighter-touch option

Don't need new hardware? Just switch the monitoring

If your panel, keypad and sensors are otherwise working fine, you don't need to replace any hardware to get better protection. Moving your monitoring to AMCO's LiveTalk service - which offers two-way audio verification - can be done on many existing ADT-installed wired systems.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

It depends on when and where it was installed, but ADT-installed wired systems commonly use one of three panel families: Honeywell Galaxy, Visonic (PowerMax or PowerMaster), or Scantronic. An engineer can confirm which one you have from the panel casing or keypad.
Usually not. Wired alarm systems are far easier and cheaper to upgrade than wireless ones, because the components and cabling are already accessible and standard. In most cases we replace the panel and keypad and reuse the existing wiring and sensors.
Often, yes. Existing wired sensors can generally be reused or extended when the panel is upgraded, rather than replaced. An engineer will confirm compatibility as part of a survey.
Yes. If your existing ADT-installed system is otherwise working fine, you don't need to replace the panel to improve monitoring - see our guide on switching ADT alarm monitoring to AMCO's LiveTalk service.
Costs vary by property, panel condition and how much of the existing wiring can be reused, so we don't quote figures here. Visit our price comparison page for current pricing, or call for a free, no-obligation quote.
